CHRIST HEAD

From Dr. Oliver I. Spence, W.D.: This religio-folk art served as a representation of Christ in Catholic processions. There are viewing holes in the in the eyes so the individual carrying the 11 pound, wooden mask may see. The entire work is chiseled from one solid piece of hard wood and then beautifully hand painted.

The original home for this item was a small church near Michoacán, Mexico. Resulting from the 1985 earthquake, the main church building became unsafe and was virtually abandoned for several years thereafter. Items, such as this, were kept in a separate smaller building, thus surviving the quake. Not long after, the ceremonial mask found its way to the collection of a resident of Central California, and later sold as part of her estate in 1999 to Dr. Oliver I. Spence. It is once again available.
