FENUGREEK SEED *Whole

General information: This herb tastes great. In India, the seed is incorporated into curry blends. India's traditional Ayurvedic physicians prescribed it to nursing mothers to increase their milk. In American folk medicine, Fenugreek is used in treating menstrual discomforts. It is also helpful in symptoms of menopause. Fenugreek is considered to be an aphrodisiac and rejuvenator.

Fenugreek contains choline, which may aid the thinking process, and antioxidants that slow aging and help prevent disease.

Fenugreek has also been administered internally for stomach ailments, due to its soothing mucilaginous properties. Animal studies have revealed a number of potential therapeutic applications of the seed -including its use in treating cancer, elevated cholesterol levels, diabetes, inflammations, microbial and fungal infections, and stomach ulcers. In India, fenugreek seeds have traditionally been used as a treatment for diabetes. Various studies have identified hypoglycemic activity of various fenugreek seed extracts in animals. A recent study showed that fenugreek seeds significantly lowered serum cholesterol levels (14 percent reduction) in a twenty-four-week study with sixty non-insulin-dependent diabetics. Fenugreek is often used in herbal medicine in North Africa, the Middle East, and India as a remedy for a wide variety of conditions. Fenugreek is helpful in lowering fever, with some authorities comparing their ability to that of quinine. In animal experiments, fenugreek has been shown to inhibit liver cancer, stimulate uterine contractions, and to have an anti-diabetic action. Fenugreek contains steroidal saponins, alkaloids, mucilage, protein, vitamins A, B, C, and Minerals.

Fenugreek is very easy to incorporate in regular meals. The taste of the seed is reminiscent of maple sugar. Fenugreek is soothing, flavorful, and nutritious.

Tea - Take as a warming drink for menstrual pain, stomach upsets, and, if a nursing mother, to increase milk flow. One-teaspoon crushed seed, add sweetener to taste.
