From the editor: In the medieval world humans lived deep within the cycles of the seasons, closer to the bounty of the earth. It was a time of omens, portents, and signs. Medieval humans lived in a world rich with symbolism and esoteric meaning. The ancient, old ways were giving way to new ways of interacting with and understanding the natural world. In this time of transition and even conflict, our ancestors blended a variety of pagan and Christian beliefs in their daily lives. The process was long and slow. Many people worked to maintain the old ways for numerous years.

We offer the lore and history of this intriguing time so that we can understand where we came from and who we once were. In the not-so-distant past, we lived within the circle of nature. Indeed, The Wicca Cookbook honors the past by remembering the Middle Ages and the people of that era. As we start the new millennium, the wheel has turned, and in our own ways, we are returning to those beliefs and perhaps learning once again to know the natural world and live as one with the Mother.
