Moon Magic was published posthumously from extensive notes and manuscripts Fortune left behind at the time of her death in 1946. It was to be the last in a series of fiction and nonfiction that she planned as a course of study in magic. The two key nonfiction titles are Psychic Self-Defense and The Mystical Qabalah. Her fiction titles in the series include The Secrets o f Dr. Taverner, The Demon Lover, The Winged Bull, The Goat Foot God, The Sea Priestess, and finally Moon Magic. Fortune claimed that she presented her theories in nonfiction, but that her fictional works were clear, practical manuals for putting those theories into practice. In her own words, "The Mystical Qabalah gives the theory, but the novels give the practice....
